What is a Pre Filter? The "First Line of Defence" in an Air-Filtration System
In every air-filtration system — from a home air conditioner to a pharma cleanroom AHU — there is always a filter layer right at the intake. That is the Pre Filter, sometimes called the "coarse filter". Although it is cheap and rarely the star of the show, the Pre Filter directly determines the life and operating cost of the entire downstream filter chain.
1. What is a Pre Filter?
Pre means "before" — and that's exactly what it does: the Pre Filter is the first filter, sitting ahead of the Medium and HEPA/ULPA in the 3-stage chain. Its main jobs:
- Remove large particles — hair, fur, fibres, debris, small insects.
- Protect the Medium Filter downstream from premature clogging.
- Extend the life of the main filters (Medium, HEPA, ULPA) by 3-5×.
A Pre Filter acts like a "fly screen" — it does not have to be tight, but it must be thick and wide enough to retain every large particle without choking the airflow.
2. Filtration efficiency
Pre Filters can remove up to 65-85% of coarse dust from the air. This efficiency corresponds to the G3 → G4 classification (old EN 779) or Coarse 60% → Coarse 80% (new ISO 16890). Although that number is not impressive next to HEPA (99.95%), it does exactly the right job: stops the bulk of the dust mass so that finer filters only deal with fine particles.
3. Construction and types of Pre Filter
Pre Filters use different materials depending on the application:
a. In industry
Pre Filters are typically made from synthetic (polyester) filter wool at various thicknesses (10 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm…) depending on the workshop and equipment. Common forms:
- White filter wool rolls — cut to AHU size and clipped into a metal-mesh frame. The most flexible and cheapest form.
- Green gradient-density panels — open side facing the airflow, denser side downstream, optimised for dust holding.
- Panel pre-filters — pre-framed for easy AHU installation.
- Washable Pre Filters — metal mesh or EPDM foam that can be washed and reused.
b. In domestic appliances
Pre Filters are typically a cross-hatched plastic mesh built into air purifiers, air conditioners, and vacuum cleaners. This type is washable, captures large dust, and protects the HEPA layer inside the unit.
4. Strategic role in the 3-stage filter system
Think of the Pre Filter as the "outer-perimeter guard" — it does not catch small targets, but it stops every coarse threat:
| Filter stage | Primary target | Efficiency | Position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre Filter (G3-G4) | Hair, fur, dust >10 µm | 65-85% | AHU inlet |
| Medium Filter (F6-F9) | Fine dust 0.5-1 µm | 60-95% | Mid-AHU |
| HEPA H13-H14 | Ultrafine dust 0.3 µm | 99.95-99.995% | Air-supply outlet |
| ULPA U15-U17 | Ultrafine particles 0.12 µm | ≥99.9995% | Terminal box / FFU |
Without a Pre Filter, Medium and HEPA filters "gorge" on coarse dust — they clog quickly, ΔP spikes, the fan works harder, and HEPA replacement costs (5-20 million VND each) start kicking in within months. Installing a Pre Filter at 100,000-500,000 VND saves tens of millions per year — the highest-ROI investment in the entire system.
5. When to replace a Pre Filter
The Pre Filter has the shortest replacement cycle in the chain:
- Heavy industrial environments (cement, metalworking, woodworking): every 1-2 months.
- Office / hospital AHUs: every 2-3 months.
- Home air purifiers: wash the plastic mesh every 2-4 weeks; replace the wool every 3-6 months.
The clearest sign is a doubling of the filter ΔP from initial, or a visible grey-brown discolouration. Some plants install a Magnehelic differential-pressure gauge for continuous tracking — simple but very effective.
6. Tips for picking a Pre Filter
- Pick the right thickness: 10-25 mm for standard AHUs, 50 mm for heavy-dust environments.
- Prefer gradient-density wool (thin-to-dense layering): even dust loading, longer life.
- Check the filter class on the packaging: G3 / G4 / Coarse 65-85%.
- Match the AHU frame size: avoid bypass gaps at the edges.
- Keep one cycle's spare stock: avoid stopping the AHU to wait for delivery.
7. Pre Filters in industrial dust-collection systems
Beyond AHUs, Pre Filters are widely used in:
- Paint booths, sand-blasting booths — block overspray and abrasive dust.
- Welding booths, laser-cutting enclosures — block large smoke and metal particles.
- Cyclone + cartridge dust collectors — Pre Filter panels upstream of cartridges to protect them from very large particles.
- Wood and textile plant extraction systems — protect the extraction fan and bag filters.
Conclusion
The Pre Filter is the "small coin that saves a lot" — low cost, simple technology, but huge impact on operating performance and maintenance cost across the system. Investing correctly and replacing on schedule is the secret to keeping Medium, HEPA, and ULPA at peak performance.
