What is a Medium Filter?

The English word "medium" itself means intermediate.

A Medium Filter is therefore an intermediate filter: it is not the first filtration stage, but sits between the coarse pre-filter and the fine final filter. It is widely deployed in central air-handling units (AHUs) of commercial HVAC and cleanroom systems.

How a Medium Filter Works

A Medium filter is essentially a mesh of randomly arranged fibres. The media can be made of carbon fibre, fabric, or filter paper / cloth (such as Puchikpo) — selected to meet a grade between F6 and F9 per EN 779.

A Medium filter can remove up to 95% of coarse dust and any airborne particle down to a minimum intrusive particle size of 500 nanometres (0.5 µm).

Construction Types

Three basic constructions are available:

  • Separator — rigid pleats held apart by metal/paper separators.
  • Mini-pleat — densely pleated for high media area in a thin form factor.
  • Bag — pocket / bag form, high dust-holding capacity for AHU side-access slots.

Grade Avg efficiency (0.4 µm) Min particle Typical use
F660–80%0.5 µmAHU intermediate stage; pre-stage to F7–F9 + HEPA
F780–90%0.5 µmAHU intermediate; standard mid-grade for commercial HVAC
F890–95%0.5 µmAHU upper-intermediate; pre-stage to terminal HEPA in cleanrooms
F9≥ 95%0.5 µmAHU final intermediate; final stage before terminal HEPA
  • Filter media: carbon fibre, fabric, Puchikpo filter paper, or filter cloth — chosen to match the F-grade band.
  • Up to 95% dust removal with a minimum intrusive particle size of 0.5 µm.
  • Designed to extend the life of the terminal HEPA filter by loading first.
  • Used predominantly in air-handling units (AHUs) for commercial and industrial HVAC.
