What is a Pre Filter?
"Pre" simply means before / in front of.
A Pre Filter is therefore the first (coarse) filtration layer. Its job is to remove large dust, hair, fibres, and similar particulate so the second-stage Medium Filter immediately behind it does not clog prematurely — extending the service life of the main filters significantly.
A Pre Filter can remove up to 65–85% of coarse dust from the airflow.
Construction by Application
In industrial settings, Pre Filters are typically constructed from dust-filter cotton at varying thicknesses, chosen by the factory's air-handling requirements and the machinery's design.
In civil (residential / light commercial) settings, the Pre Filter is typically a layer of plastic mesh woven in a cross / plus-sign pattern, protecting the Medium and fine filter stages downstream.
Compare Pre Filter Variants
- Primary purpose: protect Medium and HEPA stages from rapid loading.
- Captures hair, fibres, large dust, insects, leaves.
- Lowest cost / shortest service life in the filter train — designed for frequent replacement.
